Country facts that do not help explain the flag are kept out of the main reference tables.

The collection separates current geographic flags from historical and non-national designs. That distinction prevents a U.S. state, overseas territory, political movement, international organisation or historical state from being presented as though it were a present-day sovereign country. How to read the anatomy of a flag

Flag descriptions use a small vocabulary that makes complex designs easier to compare. The hoist is the edge nearest the flagpole and the fly is the free edge. The main background is the field. A separate area in the upper hoist is a canton. A symbol placed on the field is often called a charge. Romania and Chad are both vertical blue-yellow-red tricolours, so shade becomes important. Indonesia and Monaco use red over white, but their proportions differ. Ireland and Côte d’Ivoire use the same three colours in opposite orders. The Netherlands and Luxembourg are related-looking horizontal tricolours but differ in shade and proportion.

When a flag contains an emblem, check its position as well as its subject.
