Other Flags

Why these flags have their own library

Flags are used by more than current states. Former countries, independence movements, political parties, international organisations, identity communities, religious groups, regions and signal systems all create designs that are historically or culturally important. Mixing them into the current national index would blur status, dates and reuse rules, so WorldFlags.online keeps them in a separate library.

Historical flags

A historical flag record represents a design associated with a past state, government, movement or period. It should be read in that time context rather than as the current flag of a modern country. Where a source is available, the page can link to the reference used for the design or historical description. A predecessor flag may share colours or symbols with a current design without being interchangeable with it.

Organisation, political and movement flags

International organisations, political parties and social movements use flags as identifiers, but those designs can be protected by organisational rules, trademark law or political context. A downloadable reference image does not grant permission to imply endorsement, official affiliation or unrestricted commercial use.

Identity and religious flags

Identity and religious flags often develop through community use rather than a state adoption process. The relevant questions may therefore be who created the design, when it entered wider use, what its elements represent and whether the creator or an organisation has published reuse guidance. The absence of a government decree does not make a community flag unimportant; it simply means the record needs a different type of evidence.

Signal, sport and symbolic flags

Some flags communicate a function rather than representing a territory. Maritime signal flags, sporting symbols and humanitarian emblems can have precise usage rules. Their meaning may depend on context, and protected emblems can carry legal restrictions that are much stronger than those attached to ordinary national-flag display.

Browsing by colour without changing status

Historical and non-national records can appear in colour groups when their stored palette matches the page, but the card still links back to the separate record type. Colour matching is a browsing aid, not a claim that a historical banner is current or that an organisational emblem is a national flag.
