Flags with Symbols

Symbols are visible features, not universal definitions

This index groups flags by objects and emblems visible in the artwork: stars, crescents, crosses, suns, animals, plants, crowns, coats of arms and other charges. It is designed for discovery. Seeing the same symbol on two flags does not mean the symbol carries the same meaning on both.

A star can refer to unity, geography, political ideals, constituent regions or something else entirely. A crescent can have religious, historical or heraldic context. Animals may come from national heraldry, local wildlife or older coats of arms. The individual flag page is therefore the source for the meaning recorded for that design.

Simple flags and complex emblems

Some flags are dominated by one large charge; others contain a coat of arms with many small components. Symbol tags simplify those designs enough to make browsing possible, but they do not replace the detailed description. A coat-of-arms flag may contain a crown, animal, weapon and plant at the same time, while the grid may group it under only the most useful visible categories.

Using the symbol index

Use a symbol page to identify a flag from memory, compare how one motif is drawn across different designs, or move from a visual feature to the full record. If you are looking for construction rather than imagery, use design families. If colour is the stronger clue, use colour groups.
