Building your question bank…
How the quiz work?
There are two ways in. The mixed world quiz draws questions from across the whole collection and is the right choice for a general test. A country quiz works through a single flag in depth — around thirty questions covering its colours, proportions, symbolism, adoption and the country behind it.
Questions are generated from the same dataset that fills the tables on the flag pages, which means the answers are consistent with what the rest of the site says. Wrong options are drawn from real flags rather than invented, so a plausible-looking answer is usually a real fact about a different country.
Getting better at flags
Flag recognition is mostly pattern recognition, and it improves faster with structure than with repetition.
- 🧩 Learn the families first. Once you can recognise a Nordic cross, a British ensign, a Pan-African tricolour and a Pan-Arab band arrangement, a large share of the world’s flags sorts itself into groups. The design index is organised exactly this way.
- 🔍 Learn the look-alike pairs deliberately. Chad and Romania, Indonesia and Monaco, Senegal and Mali, Norway and Iceland — these are where most quiz points are lost, and they are worth studying as pairs rather than separately. The comparison tool puts them side by side.
- ⭐ Anchor on the unusual ones. Nepal, Switzerland, Cyprus, Bhutan and Mozambique are unmistakable, and knowing them for free leaves attention for the harder cases.
- 🗺️ Use the region groupings. Flags cluster geographically far more than people expect, so guessing “somewhere in West Africa” from a red-gold-green tricolour is usually a good bet.
- 🎮 Alternate between formats. The guessing game trains fast recognition; the country quiz trains detail. The two together work better than either alone.
If you want to read around the subject rather than drill it, the flag facts collection covers the history, design conventions and oddities behind most of the questions.
FAQs
Is the quiz scored?
Yes. Your score is shown at the end, with the correct answer displayed for every question you got wrong so the round is useful even when it goes badly.
Do I need an account?
No. The quiz runs entirely in your browser and nothing is stored on a server. Closing the tab ends the session.
How many questions are in a country quiz?
Around thirty, depending on how much is documented for that particular flag. Countries with a designer, a detailed coat of arms and a long history generate more questions than a plain bicolour does.
Where do the questions come from?
They are built from the flag dataset — colours, proportions, adoption dates, symbolism, capitals, currencies and so on. Every answer can be checked against the corresponding flag page.
Are US state flags included?
Yes, each of the fifty states has its own question bank, and state flags also appear in the mixed quiz.
